Summer 2010
Hello members of the Manatee County Historical Society,
We are a wonderful active old society formed 64 or more years ago to preserve the history of Manatee County for future generations lest we forget who we are and from where we come. Each generation can not move into the future and build a better world unless they understand the good and the bad of generations before them. It is so very important.
We took in 8 new members this year, gave awards to students at our local History Fair and supplied a number of judges to help out. Then we helped to pay for our local winners to go on to State and the National History Day in June! Helping these honor students to grow and widen their minds is a wonderful thing we can do.
We also have been able to collect more monies for the continuing work of preserving the old Vanderipe House.
This year we were informed that the original dedication markers for the “Old Skyway” bridge had surfaced but needed some lost emblems replaced. So we had these remade and one marker will be installed at the St. Petersburg end of the bridge and one will be set up on our Manatee County end. We hope to have a number of our members and friends come to the dedications of these markers. We will try to keep you all informed as to where and when.
The Program Committee has chosen very interesting speakers who will share the histories of Manatee County’s beginnings. I am sure you will enjoy them all.
We meet at the Renaissance on 9th on 1816 9th Street West at 12 noon on the 3rd Wednesday of each month; in October and November, and then from January through May. The price of the delicious luncheon is $16.00 which covers the lunch, room gratuities and of course our great programs
See you all in October. Just be sure to call Liz Boling 941-748-5788 or Lorraine Tetlus 941-748-6694 for reservations. Call early each month. No reservations can be taken after the Friday before the luncheon. This allows Renaissance to accommodate all properly.
